Napoleon Counterstamped 5 Francs ND (c. 1815) XF40 NGC, Callatay and Forestier, "Les contremarques au tigre sur les monnaies napoléoniennes" (Revue Numismatique 2004), Type P3 and pg. 347 (2 recorded on this host). Host coin: Napoleon 5 Francs 1811-W (cf. KM704.8); Counterstamp: Caged Lion (above ear) and rectangular punch (over eye) (AU Strong). An intriguing countermarked piece from the period around the Hundred Days. Though Dewamin expressed that the belief by numismatists that this countermark (often misattributed as an owl) was applied in Vendée was not supported by period documents, Callatay and Forestier published new research in the Revue Numismatique in 2004 that the mark was meant as a desecration of Napoleon's image--the tiger who had been caged. The two authors identified 47 examples, suggesting large-scale production and a definite clout applied to this political message.
