Republic silver Essai 5 Francs 1848 MS62 NGC, cf. KM-Pn47 (in bronze), VG-3059 var. (different edge), Maz-1265a (R1). Plain edge. By Alard. A genuinely scarce French Essai type, notably unlisted by the Standard Catalog in silver, and only documented by Guilloteau with relief edge lettering. Despite Mazard's lower rarity rating for this edge type--R1 vs. R3 for the tranche en relief--we have not been able to locate any other examples in auction records of recent years. Certainly one of the more handsome designs from this period, and a clear target in this preservation.
