Napoleon III silvered-tin Essai 5 Francs 1853 UNC Details (Reverse Rim Damage, Stained) NGC, Paris mint, KM-Unl., VG-Unl., Maz-1639c var. (R2; silvered-bronze), Gad-Unl. Plain edge. By Bouvet. An intriguing and seemingly unpublished Essai type by this engraver perhaps best known for his "Par la grace de Dieu" Patterns. Interestingly, Gadoury records a uniface Essai of that type (cf. Gad-731) in silvered tin, although he cites no such examples for this issue. It is curious to wonder if the bubbling seen over the obverse had something to do with the production process for this odd metallic combination, perhaps suggesting why production of similar Essais would have been abandoned. Certainly a piece worthy of closer study.
