Great Britain
Kings of All England. Edward the Confessor (1042-1066) Penny ND (1042-1044) MS64 NGC, Winchester mint, Frithemund as moneyer, Pacx type, S-1171, N-813, EMC-1054.0303 (same dies). 1.07gm. +EDǷERD | •REX ΛNG (group of three pellets), diademed bust of Edward left, scepter held before / +FRI | ĐEM | VND O | ǷINC (NC ligate), voided long cross with circle in center and each limb ending in a crescent, letter of PΛCX in angles. The earliest Penny type from Edward's reign, with this being only the second such example we have ever offered--and a striking example at that! Embellished with seafoam toning accents on the obverse, the strike on the whole appears carefully centered on the flan. Notably, we have been unable to locate any other examples of this moneyer for Edward's coinage in recent auction records, while the Early Medieval Corpus records only 4 examples of this mint-moneyer combination, 3 of which are minted from the same dies as this piece.
