Mughal Empire. Shah Jahan gold Mohur AH 1038 Year 2 Month of Azar (1628/1629) MS65 NGC, Surat mint, KM255.6, Whitehead-Unl., Hull-Unl., Liddle Type G-71. A virtually flawless specimen in all respects, which could very nearly be seen in a finer technical grade. A type almost universally struck on undersized flans, this piece is only the mildest touch off-center, without losing even the smallest flourish of the calligraphy. Almost certainly from the Akola Hoard of 1974, believed to represent the military pay sent from Surat to Mughal troops fighting near Golkonda.
