Rama V silver Specimen Pattern 1/4 Baht (Salu'ng) ND (c. 1900) SP65 PCGS, Uncertain mint (possibly Birmingham), KM-Unl. (cf. KM-Y33), LeMay-Unl., Krisadaolarn/Mihailovs-Unl., cf. Sweeny-SM9x. An engaging and strikingly enigmatic Pattern type, surprisingly poorly documented in the standard literature. Although the Standard Catalog notes the existence of Proofs for this type, it does not record the issue as a Pattern. Though missing from the Jacobs Collection, an example in the Goodman sale (Spink-Taisei Auction 4, February 1988, Lot 89) was simply cataloged as a Proof, and was apparently similarly cataloged in the Bangkok Treasury catalog Coinage of the Rattanakosin era, AD 1782-1982. Krisadaolarn and Mihailovs note that undated examples of this coinage were produced by mints in France, England, and, later, Thailand, with the European examples "produced to a higher standard [of quality]." Indeed a superior overall execution in both the legends and Rama's portrait is detectable compared to the Thai-minted pieces. Comparison with the known Patterns of the Paris mint (see our July 2020 sale of the Norman Jacobs Collection, lot 30346), show distinctive differences in Rama's dress, perhaps suggesting that this issue is more properly assigned to an English mint. Sweeny, in fact, records that the Birmingham mint received an order for a mint plant in 1900, together with dies for the Baht, Salu'ng and Fuang. On the whole beautifully preserved, with a crisp obverse iridescence balanced against and icy white reverse.
