Aron Hirst & Sohn mint, KM-Unl. (as a set). By all indications an exceptionally rare "Pattern" set of these usually prolific issues even in high Mint State grades, with our research turning up no other examples in auction records of the last 20 years. Produced by the German firm Aron Hirst & Sohn in 1901 in accordance with the Uruguayan Law No. 2673 of December 6, 1900, just 15 nickel Proof Patterns were reportedly struck, consisting of 5 Proofs each of the 1, 2, and 5 Centesimos. These Patterns were delivered by the Director of the Royal Mint of Berlin to the Uruguayan diplomatic representative in Germany on August 27, 1901. It has supposed that with the exception of a single set retained in the archives of the Uruguayan Legation in Berlin, all the remaining Patterns were destined for the Banco de la Republica in Montevideo. Whereas older references such as Artunez, and Almanzar and Seppa only record this issue as a business strike, the Standard Catalog admittedly notes the existence of Proofs for Centesimo and 5 Centesimos, though it lumps these under the standard copper-nickel coinage. To date, NGC records having seen just one Proof example of the 5 Centesimos, as well as 2 each of the 1 and 2 Centesimos.
