(x) NGC XF40 | James I (1603-1625), Second Coinage, Crown, 1 July - 11 November 1607, Tower, revised legends, (m.m.) • IACOBVS • D .' G .' MAG .' BRIT .' FRAN .' ET • HIB .' REX •, King on horseback trotting right, ground line below, rev. (m.m.) • QVÆ • DEVS • CONIVNXIT • NEMO • SEPARET •, square-topped and lightly garnished shield, 30.29g, 7h, m.m. grapes over rose (FRC V*/VIII*, this coin listed and plated, lot 27; Tallent 33; Hulett VI, 376; North 2097; Spink 2652), usual die flaw below ground line and on reverse, slightly doubled to reverse legends with the usual light stressing in otherwise handsomely cabinet toned fields, the struck details considerably above average for issue, a most pleasing very fine, very rare, in NGC holder, graded XF40 (Cert. #2826542-001).

H M Lingford, Glendining, 24 November 1950, lot 57 - £24.0.0 [Baldwin] - "The obverse die is the rarest of the second coinage marks, struck from one obverse and two reverse dies. The obeverse die is engraved in low relief, and the Lingford grade for this piece 'extremely fine' is based on the absence of actual wear."

Baldwin handled a number of low profile dispersals of Crown collections following the Wall Street Crash, including the cabinets of Col. W. Symons (1932), H G C Day (1935) and E E Yates (1938) to name but a few. Similarly Spink would handle the dispersal of the Lt. Col T G Taylor Collection via the Numismatic Circular in May 1931, as well as the mysterious 'Wolfe Collection' in parcels all curiously described as having 'Indian tone' from 1927. Regrettably an earlier pedigree, whilst expected, is not yet discovered.
