(x) NGC XF40 | Charles I (1625-1649), Group III, Type 3a, Crown, 1635-1636, Tower (under King), (m.m.) • CAROLVS D.' G.' MAG.' BR.' FR.' ET • HIB.' REX • third horseman left, sword upright, no ground line, rev. -:- (m.m.) -:- CHRISTO • AVSPICE • REGNO, oval garnished shield surmounted, 29.93g, 10h, m.m. crown over bell / crown over bell (Hawkins 3a; Francis -; FRC XV*/XX*, lot -, cf. Note 5 - 'Only one example recorded, in the BM'; Brooker - [257/258 same dies]; Barr 36 this coin; North 2195; Spink 2758), some faint metal stressing and striking softness to horse's head and corresponding area of reverse, otherwise on a neat round flan, hints of tone and lustre to peripheries, strictly fine, of the highest rarity according to Cooper and possibly the only known example in private hands, in NGC holder, graded XF40 (Cert. #4460456-054).

It would appear the greater the magnitude of a major numismatic dispersal, the higher the likelihood of the pedigree 'getting lost'. A process that has been further exacerbated in recent years by the popularisation of third-party grading within the English series. Unfortunately for the previous vendor, their omission of the Barr pedigree in 2019 robbed the market of the knowledge about this critical variety, previously only known to Cooper (BNJ, 1970) from one specimen held in the national collection of the British Museum. That is to stress the combined might of Montagu, Murdoch, Lingford, Cooper, Brooker and Rodney-Smith failed to acquire the present variety with the shrewd eyes of both Barr and the current vendor appreciative of the magnitude of this important second specimen. The present cataloguer can trace no further instance of the variety in commerce, and so confidently presents this coin as a critical addition for any Crown collector or Charles I connoisseur, especially when further consideration is made to the die pairing, which albeit not countersunk with the crown privy mark, also produced the phenomenal Slaney-Lingford-Webb-Neck-Bergne-Tyssen Crown sold at Spink (15 May 2003, lot 40).
