(x) George III (1760-1820), Emergency Issues (2 January 1804), Octagonal-Countermark Dollar (8-Reales), 1796-FM, Mexico City, laureate and draped bust of Charles IV right, counterfeit [?] octagon countermark of George III in centre, rev. crowned square-topped shield dividing pillars, security edge, 26.77g, 12h (Bull 1868; ESC 138; Spink 3766), lightly cleaned with heavy adjustment, tooling and gouging marks above crown on reverse, a probable contemporary counterfeit punch of George III with 'soft' striking details, good to fair, the host coin otherwise perfectly authentic, very fine, with PCGS ticket 'Authenticity Unverifiable' (Cert. #32064989).
A highly curious piece for which the third party grading has neglected to pass official judgement. In the view of the present cataloguer, the countermark could be official judging by its profile and the struck method of application, but is noticeably soft and so could easily be a stolen or contemporaneously manufactured forged punch applied to an authentic 8-Reales
