(x) NGC PF65 MATTE | Edward VII (1901-1910), Matte Proof Crown, 1902 II, by de Saulles and Pistrucci, bare head right, rev. St George and Dragon, raised lettered edge upwards, 12h (L&S 2; Davies 1530; Stratos = Gemini 259; Bull 3562; ESC 362; Spink 3978), a magnificent sandblasted Proof of Record with a delightful uniform tone overlying fresh original surfaces, a flourish of fiery red tone below date, choice FDC, in NGC holder, strictly graded PF65 MATTE (Cert. #3153790-014).
Third party grading becomes notoriously wayward when it comes to 'Sandblasted' or Matte Proofs of the early 20th Century with the frequency of evidently cleaned examples (at the time collectors expected brilliant proofs so often cleaned the coins fresh from the mint!) occupying higher grading tiers whilst those honest original survivors often languish in '61' and '62' holders. However both the present cataloguer and the third party grader concur with this delightful example that is wholly befitting of its 'GEM' designation third party grade, and contestably worthy of an even higher slot too.
Estimate: £1000 - £1500
