CHINA. Mint Error -- Struck Over 1907 10 Cash -- Cent, ND (1936-39). PCGS VF-20.
cf. KM-Y-347 (for overtype); cf. KM-Y-10 (for undertype). Providing one of the most dramatic examples of an error this cataloger has ever seen, a very clear impression of the famous sun pattern used on Year 25 to 28 Cents produced by the Republic of China is overstruck on a cut down Empire 10 Cash. The most likely option for explaining such an error is mint sport, as it seems almost inconceivable how else it could occur. Traces of the expected spade design are present on the obverse, though they are weakly struck and hard to spot. The piece is well circulated, further supporting the hypothesis that this piece was brought into the mint for purposes of overstriking. With no comparable examples, this piece is certain to stand upon its own as a RARITY, and should demand much attention from anyone who loves Chinese coins.
Estimate: $700 - $1000
