HONG KONG. Medallic City Hall Dollar, 1867. Hong Kong Mint. Victoria. PCGS PROOF-62.
KM-Unlisted; Mars-Unlisted; Prid-318. Obverse: Portrait of Victoria left (obverse dollar die); Reverse: Inscription in 9 lines "HONG KONG CITY HALL FOUNDATION STONE LAID BY H E SIR RG MACDONNELL C B 23rd FEBRUARY 1867 A HERRMITTE ARCHT."; Edge: Plain. A true RARITY of Hong Kong during the British period. This cataloger was able to find less than 10 examples of the type being offered in the past decade, with Pridmore not providing an estimate of the number produced. The present example offers up a wonderful concoction of peach and violet toning that hugs the beautifully struck devices. No major contacts appear atop the surfaces. Given the breathtaking infrequency with which this piece is offered, this example is certain to find many bidders competing, with the possibility of soaring past the estimate range.

Old City Hall in Hong Kong was completed in 1869 after two years of construction and differed from many other Public buildings in that it did not house government offices, but was rather only used for public purposes. A theater, library and museum were among the many rooms available for public use.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.

Estimate: $20000 - $30000
