GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Dollar, 1900-(C). Calcutta Mint. NGC AU Details--Reverse Cleaned.
KM-T5; Mars-BTD1; Prid-10. Weak C variety. Pridmore only lists two versions of the 1900 issue--one with a B (for Bombay), and one without mintmark (for Calcutta). There are, however, examples known with a clear C to the upper right of Britannia's right foot. On others, however, this mark is not nearly as prominent. This specimen exhibits a very weak and subtle C in the spot where the more sharply incised C mintmarks appear, making it appear that some were shallowly added to the die. As such, it would seem appropriate to assign all non-B marked examples from 1900 to Calcutta, with there being a distinct breakdown between those with a strong C and those with a weak or no C.
