HUNGARY. Hercules & the Hydra/The Outbreak of World War I Cast Silver Medal, 1914. NGC MS-63.
Wurzbach-8917; Huszar/Prokopius-6825. By R. A. Zutt. Diameter: 82mm; Weight: 319.60 gms. Obverse: Hercules facing, head lowered right, holding club and strangling the Hydra; Reverse: Upward-facing sword over bushel of wheat; rising sun in background; in foreground, heavily stylized out line of the year, "19"-"14". A fairly interesting piece of art created at the outbreak of World War I, this type is seen from time to time in bronze, but is VERY RARE when encountered in silver as is the case here. Quite deeply toned in the recesses, with quite an immense relief creating great texture and depth. A great blending of renaissance and contemporary styles, and offering powerful commentary on the ravages of war and the hope for an approaching calm.
Estimate: $500 - $750
