NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra (under Kingdom of the Netherlands). 1/2 Stiver (2 Duits), 1841-S. Surabaya Mint. NGC EF-40.
KM-Unlisted; Sch-Unlisted. An INCREDIBLY RARE and seemingly unpublished type, this interesting piece is clearly denominated as a 1/2 Stiver, even though that denomination was last struck in 1826. Similarly, the 2 Cents denomination (which was the equivalent of the 1/2 Stiver [2 Duits], and used the same overall type of planchet) began production in 1833, running until 1841. Therefore, the present specimen would appear to be either a re-issuing of the 1/2 Stiver denomination 15 years after it was last used or, more likely, a muling of an 1841 2 Cents reverse and a previously used 1/2 Stiver from the 1820's. Either way, a tremendous opportunity for the specialist in Dutch East Indies issues.
