NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra (under Kingdom of the Netherlands). Cent (Duit), 1826-S. Surabaya Mint. NGC VF-25.
KM-Unlisted; Sch-Unlisted. Another intriguing, EXTREMELY RARE, and seemingly unpublished type, this evenly handled specimen appears to mule two different denomination systems, as the 1/4 Stivers (last issued in 1836) overlapped briefly with the Cents (first issued in 1833). Accordingly, this example would seem to feature a Cent obverse with a 1/4 Stiver-sized reverse given the 1826 date. Quite possibly, the need for dies in Surabaya resulted in this type of muling. Also of note, the "S" mintmark on this issue appears to be retrograde.
Estimate: $1000 - $1500
