PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Peru. 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1832-34). Manila Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC AU-55. Countermark: AU Strong.
KM-80; Basso-55; PNM #6, Unlisted; PNM #16, Unlisted; PNM #6, 106; Gil-5-4-1-C. Type V countermark: crowned F.7.o within circular incuse. Countermark applied to the obverse of an 1823-LIMA JP "Libre" 8 Reales from Peru (short tassels above date variety). A SCARCE and exceptionally desirable host type with a slightly better date as well, this tremendously remarkable example presents quality that is virtually unrivaled. The degree of handling is very minor, and some charming hints of brilliance emerge from the protected areas. Meanwhile, the countermark itself is quite bold and expressive, centrally and horizontally applied across the column, making it a great showcase for the overall type. Unquestionably, a specimen that will be eagerly welcomed into its next collection.
Estimate: $15000 - $25000
