PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Bolivia. 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1832-34). Manila Mint. Isabel II. NGC VF-25. Countermark: VF Standard.
KM-100; Basso-56; PNM #6, 189; PNM #16, 182; PNM #21, VIII 14; Cacho-Unlisted; Gil-5-4-1-II. Type VI countermark: crowned Y.II. within circular incuse. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834 and suppressed 31 March 1837 (by decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark applied to the obverse of an 1831-PTS JL 8 Soles from Bolivia. One of the more available dates from this mint, for these assayer's letters we have eight documented examples with two different crown varieties. The countermark is deeply impressed and bold on a nicely preserved example displaying rich mottled gray patina with areas of richer coloration among the devices. Close inspection reveals evidence of being cleaned, now toned over and attractive. Despite its shortcomings, this handsome survivor is pleasing to the eye sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection which it enters.

Estimate: $800 - $1200
