SICILY, Syracuse. Deinomenid tyranny, 485-466 BC. AR tetradrachm (17,28 g). Struck under Gelon I, circa 480-478 BC. Charioteer driving a slow quadriga right, holding reins and goad; Nike flying right above, crowning horses / ΣVRA-KOΣ-I-ON, Head of Arethusa to right, wearing necklace, pearl diadem and with hair tied in a krobylos; four dolphins swimming clockwise around. Well-struck and well centered. Attractive iridescent cabinet toning with underlying luster.
