Vespasian. Circa AD 400. Æ cast contorniate (37 mm; 24,78 g). IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS III, Laureate head right, drapery on left shoulder; countermark of palm branch / Helmeted and naked Mars advancing right, holding spear, shield and resting left foot set on prow. Holed at 6 o'clock. Surfaces smoothed. Some details (spear and shield) completely worn away and/or poorly made in the casting process. Still an attractive piece. Dark-brown patina with some earthen deposits. Very rare. Alföldi 238.3, Plate 103 no. 11, Purchased from Stanley Gibbons, London, 22.04.1976 Grade: 1/1-
