SICILY, Syracuse. Dionysios I, 406-367 BC. AR dekadrachm (42,97 g). Unsigned dies by Kimon. Struck circa 405-400 BC. Charioteer driving galloping quadriga left, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left; above, Nike flying right and crowning charioteer; below thick exergual line; military harness: shield, greaves, cuirass and Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal line; ΑΘΛΑ below (out of flan) / ΣΥΡ-ΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ, Head of Arethusa left, wearing earring with pendant and necklace; her hair confined by ampyx and net sphendone; four dolphins swimming around. Very light porosity on the surfaces and minor die rust on obverse. Attractive steel-grey cabinet toning. A magnificent representation of one of the ancient world's greatest numismatic masterpieces.
