SICILY, Syracuse. Dionysios I, 406-367 BC. AR dekadrachm (41,32 g). Reverse die signed by Euainetos, but only Y-A barely visible. Struck circa 405-400 BC. Charioteer driving galloping quadriga left, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left; above, Nike flying right and crowning charioteer; below thick exergual line; military harness: shield, greaves, cuirass and Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal line; ΑΘΛΑ below (out of flan) / ΣΥ−ΡΑ−Κ−ΟΣ−ΙΩΝ, Wreathed head of Persephone-Kore left, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace; four dolphins swimming around; EY-AINE below lower dolphin, but only Y-A barely visible. Some corrosion in fields and minor die rust in obverse field, otherwise, a well-struck and spectacular coin with a pleasing old cabinet toning.
