SICILY, Syracuse. Dionysios I, 406-367 BC. AR dekadrachm (42,80 g). Unsigned dies in the style of Euainetos. Struck circa 405-380 BC. Charioteer driving galloping quadriga left, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left; above, Nike flying right and crowning charioteer; below thick exergual line: military harness: shield, greaves, cuirass and Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal line; ΑΘΛΑ below (out of flan) / Σ-ΥΡΑ−Κ−Ο-Σ-ΙΩΝ, Wreathed head of Persephone-Kore left, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace; four dolphins swimming around; shell behind neck. Obverse struck from slightly worn die. Excellent metal quality and light grey cabinet toning with some iridesence.
