SICILY. Akragas. Circa 465/4-446 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25.0 mm, 17.27 g, 10 h). AKRAC - ANTOΣ (partially retrograde) Eagle standing to left on an Ionic column capital with volutes to left and right. Rev. Crab, with open claws, seen from above. BMFA 223 (this coin). Westermark 423.2 (this coin). An outstanding example: a lovely, sharply struck coin, attractively toned, and with a pedigree going back to before 1903. Extremely fine.
From a European collection, ex Numismatic Fine Arts XVIII, 31 March 1987, 28 and XVI, 2 December 1985, 36, from the Collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and that of Francis Bartlett, Numismatic Fine Arts VIII, 6 June 1980, 16 (BMFA inventory number 03.928 = acquired in 1903 through Francis Bartlett, as part of a small group of coins that came with a number of other acquisitions, including the great Warren Collection, of which the whole was, in fact, put together by E. P. Warren from the late 1890s until c. 1901) .
