PAPHLAGONIA. Sinope. Circa 200-120 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 8.30 g, 11 h). Turreted head of Tyche to left; struck with a countermark, within a circular indent, of a rayed head of Helios facing, with, between the rays, Σ-Ι-Ν-Ω-Π-Ε[-Ω-Ν] . Rev. Σ[Ι] - ΝΩ Poseidon seated to left on a backless throne, holding a dolphin in his right hand and a trident with his left; in the field to right, Β; struck with a relief countermark of a laureate head of Zeus to left. BMC 34 (for the countermark). RG 47. Cf. SNG BM Black Sea 1515-1517. Very attractively toned, with some uncleaned deposits as found. Countermark slightly misstruck, otherwise, about extremely fine.
