CELTIC, Lower Danube. Imitations of Thasos. Late 2nd-1st centuries BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32.90 mm, 16.82 g, 11 h). Celticized head of Dionysos to left, wearing elaborate ivy wreath with leaves and berries; behind, star-like object. Rev. Legend devolved to a curved double row of pellets nearly enclosing the type: a simplified figure of Herakles, with spiky hair and arms hanging stiffly at his sides. Göbl OTA pl. 50, Class V/B. Cf. Lanz 996. Perfectly centered and struck on excellent metal. Attractive light toning, and with wonderfully idiosyncratic depictions of both Dionysos and Herakles. About extremely fine.
From an American collection.
