Brazil
Minas Gerais. João Prince Regent Counterstamped 960 Reis ND (1808) XF45 NGC, KM243, LMB-452. Host: Charles IV 8 Reales 1797 Mo-FM from Mexico (cf. KM109); Counterstamp: Crowned arms (obverse) and banded globe (reverse) (AU Strong). A fully struck double-sided stamp, the predecessor of the 960 Reis coin. In 1808, after fleeing Napoleon's invasion, the Portuguese royalty was in debt. One of the ways to pay for the immensely expensive transfer of the Royal nobility to Rio was the idea of countermarking the Spanish 8 Reales coins, which were worth 750 Reis, raising their value to 960. The venture succeeded, leading to the actual 960 Reis coin, overstruck on 8 Reales that were purchased by the Portuguese from the neighbor Spanish Colonies, for less than what they would soon be worth in Brazil.
