Carausius BI Radiate. London(?), circa AD 287. [...] CARAVSIV[S ...], radiate, [draped and cuirassed?] bust to right / [PA]X A[VG], Pax standing to left, holding olive branch and sceptre. Cf. RIC V.2 878-891; Webb p. 33. 2.32g, 19mm, 11h.
Good Very Fine. Overstruck on an earlier antoninianus of Tetricus, the legend P F AVG and a sliver of the emperor's face are visible on the reverse.
From a private English collection.
This overstriking indicates that this coin was struck in the early stage of Carausius' reign when, in their haste to issue coinage but lacking a sufficient supply of blanks, moneyers resorted to the expedient solution of striking coins which were available at the time.
