1820 marks the first year of the double sovereign, created by Benedetto Pistrucci with his iconic St. George slaying the dragon. The 1820 double sovereign is the only double sovereign minted in the reign of George III and was not struck for circulation, but rather as a pattern--making it an extremely rare addition to any collection.
