MS 60 | ENGLAND. Henry VI, 1422-61, 1470-71.
Gold quarter-noble, ND (1422-1461).
The noble was the first English gold coin produced in major quantity, introduced during the second coinage of King Edward III. Before the noble, the gold penny and the florin were minted during the reign of King Henry III and the beginning of Edward III's. While these predecessors saw little circulation, the derivatives of the noble--the half noble and quarter noble here--were produced in quantity and were very popular. Nobles and their derivatives were struck throughout Henry VI's first reign (1422–61), but a shortage of gold resulted in fewer coins being struck.
Shield within tressure with annulets on cusps and lis above shield; ornate cross within tressure.
