As the Boers were fleeing the English invasion during the Second Boer War, they took with them their gold, blank planchets and coin press. During the war, coins were issued in the field and as there was no time to stamp the coins, they were given out blank to the soldiers. There are blank coins in the following denominations: 1 penny with and without rim, 3 pence, 6 pence, half crown, half pound, and pound with and without rim.
