Authorized by the Ordinance of 15 Nivose An X (January 5, 1802) and issued during the Haitian War of Independence against Napoleonic France. This type was commissioned by Governor Toussaint L'Ouverture, who had been appointed to his position for life by the Constitution of 1801, and died in a French prison the year after this coin was struck.
