The Beylik of Aydin was founded at the beginning of the 14th century, after the collapse of the Seljuk state and existed for more than a century before being absorbed by the Ottomans. It included most of ancient Ionia and part of Caria and Lydia. Its capital was the city of Theologos, the ancient Ephesus, which became an important commercial center and one of the main trading posts in Asia Minor, trading with the Genoese of Phocaea, Chios, Mytilene and with the Venetians. To promote these good commercial relations, the emirs of Aydin naturally imitated the silver currency most used in this region at the beginning of the 14th century, the gigliato of Naples.
