With mintname as Tihwa (Dihwa) in Chinese and Ürümqi in Uyghur. The Manchus began construction of a walled city next to the former Dzungar city of Ürümqi in 1763 which was completed in 1767. The Qianlong Emperor named the new settlement Dihua (Tihwa), meaning 'to enlighten [the uncivilized people]'. In 1954, following the founding of the People's Republic of China, the city's name was officially changed back to Ürümqi, meaning 'beautiful pasture' in the Oirat language of the Dzungar people.
