PHOENICIA, Tyre. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ (26mm, 14.04 g, 5h). Laureate head right / Two prize urns set upon table, palm frond to either side, murex shell below; ACTIA ERACLIA above and below. Rouvier 2324; BMC 379. Earthen green patina. VF. Very rare, finer than any at CoinArchives.

Tyre, after being looted and burned by Niger's army, received a beneficium from Septimius Severus for its loyalty to him. He elevated the city to be the capital of the new province Syria Phoenicia and allowed it to hold the Actia Eraclia games. The coinage naming these games are very rare, only known for Caracalla and again issued by Gordian III.
