Divus Caracalla, died 217. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 2.78 g, 6 h), struck under Elagabalus, Rome, 218-219. DIVO ANTONINO MAGNO Bare head of Divus Caracalla to right. Rev. CONSECRATIO Eagle standing front on globe with spread wings, his head turned to right. BMC 7 (Elagabal). Cohen 32. RIC 717 (Severus Alexander). Thirion 500. Rare. A beautifully toned and unsually attractive example of this highly interesting issue. Nearly extremely fine.

From the collections of Dipl.-Ing. Adrian Lang and Robert Kutcher, Classical Numismatic Group 73, 13 September 2006, 950.

Caracalla's epithet of 'Magnus' on this issue is highly unusual indeed. Clearly Elagabalus, claiming to be the late emperor's illegitimate son, alluded with this title to Caracalla's fascination with Alexander 'the Great' of Macedon.
