URUGUAY. Banco De La Republica Oriental Del Uruguay. 50 Pesos, 1939. P-38b. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
Uruguay banknotes of the 1930s are pretty, but they are also underrated, especially in the best grades. This 50 Pesos is a Top Pop note, and the only example graded Uncirculated by PMG. Take care is to not mistake this for the virtually identical type that was overprinted and repurposed for the Banco Central del Uruguay in 1967. Notes from 1967 are from "Serie D" and feature new signatures and titles at front reading "Banco Central". This 1939 example, Serie C, is a superb rarity in Gem Uncirculated grade and a key note for the country, and for the continent of South America. PMG Pop 1/None Finer.
Estimate: $500 - $1000
