William and Mary (1688-1694), Five-Guineas, 1692 QVINTO, conjoined laureate busts right, 'apostrophe flaw' between L and M of GVLIELMVS, rev. Crowned garnished shield, +•+• DECVS • ET • TVTAMEN • • ANNO • REGNI • QVINTO •, 41.72g, 6h (Bull 348 [R3]; Spink 3422), superficial mark through A of GRATIA to Mary's mouth, and a minor rim furl by M of GVLIELMVS, otherwise slightly bright and residually brilliant with natural ochre-orange toning to peripheries, a bolder very fine, the key variety for William and Mary, the edge regnal date extremely rare for this date.
Provenance
SJA 24, 23 September 2013, lot 125 - wherein graded NGC AU50 [Cert. 3415436-003] - £11,500
Heritage, CICF Signature 3019, 25 April - 1 May 2012, lot 24532 - $11,500

Besides this example, only a further NGC AU58 (Thomas Law, 13 August 2013, lot 20220); and a PCGS AU53 example offered in London in December 2017, the excessive rarity of this calendar date / regnal date combination is largely lost on the numismatic market. The variety was unknown to Edward Hawkins and Kenyon, was not represented in the Montagu and Murdoch catalogues, and absent. Two others have been traced, one in Stack's auction (6-7 December 1995, lot 644) and an example from the Numismatic Circular, 1964.
Estimate: £10,000.00 - £15,000.00
