Aethelred II (978-1016), 'Crux' Type, Penny, 991-997, Shaftesbury, Æthelgar, draped bust left, trefoil-tipped sceptre before, rev. + ÆDELGAR M-O CEFT, voided short cross, C R V X in angles commencing in second quarter, 1.65g, 6h (North 770; BMC IIIa; Spink 1148), heavily crimped and wavy, otherwise toned, a bolder very fine, a rare moneyer for this mint within only one Second Hand Type recorded on EMC.
