Stephen (1135-1154), 'Profile/Cross & Piles' Type, Penny, c. 1150-1154, Bury St. Edmunds, Asketill [Acel], STIEFNE, crowned bust left, rev. + ACE : ON : S. EDM, short cross fleury, inward voided piles surmounted by trefoils, 1.39g, 6h (Eaglen [2006], die combination 42; North 879; BMC VI; Spink 1281), on a slightly concave and irregular flan, the reverse somewhat off-struck, otherwise rich dark patina, uniformly struck up and most pleasing for this notoriously 'soft' series, a handsome very fine, very rare.
