Edward III (1327-1377), Third Coinage, Noble, 1346-1351, Military Mint at Poitiers, 'Coarse Work', EDWAR D GRA REX ANGL Z FRANC DNS hYB, in large lettering, King standing facing in ship, holding sword upright and shield, rev. IhC TRANSIENS PER MEDIVM ILLORVM IBAT, large letters, chevron-barred A's, double saltire stops, floriated cross with lis at ends, large lombardic E in centre, 7.59g, 1h, i.m. cross pattée (Potter IIa, type C/C nos 9-13 these dies unrecorded; Schneider I, - [cf. 3-4]; Lockett 1225; North 1180; Spink 1481), softly struck in parts, otherwise on a full albeit rounded flan, otherwise a bolder fine, an excessively rare example of the third coinage issue struck at the time of the Battle of Crecy and circulating at the outbreak of the Black Death, this example evidently circulating until after the reduction of standard in 1351.

Potter, NC 1963, subdivides the Edward III third period nobles into types I and II. Type II has larger lettering and the design is engraved in a less detailed, more florid, style. It is easily identified by the bowsprit which passes through, rather than behind, the forecastle. There is no example in the Schneider collection
