Charles I (1625-1649), Group D, Class IIa/IIb, Unite, 1635-1636, Tower [under King], unjewelled crowned bust left, value behind, rev. crowned oval garnished shield, dividing crowned cyphers, 9.36g, 10h (Schneider II, 153; North 2153; Spink 2692), with integral soldered suspension, lightly wiped and edges made round, otherwise a remarkably full and balanced example with only moderate traces of doubling to peripheries, struck details a bolder very fine, with a charming provenance.

Sold with an accompanying Basildon Bond envelope, stating: 'The Gold 20/- piece of Charles I was given to Canon Whytehead on his golden wedding by a member of the family. The copper medal was given to HRW by Dorothy A. Whytehead. The medal was struck after Chas. I execution.

The execution medal also alluded to in the note is now sadly lost to the midsts of time, it is likely that it was the Memorial issue by J Roettier (Eimer 162).
