Robert Mudge Marchant (1821-1902), of 18 Great George Street, Westminster, is listed as one of the competitors "for the building proposed to be erected in Hyde Park". Marchant was a civil engineer, employed by various railway companies throughout the 1840's. He was declared bankrupt in 1851, moving sometime later to New Zealand. By 1871 he had returned to London and in 1885 formed the Marchant Engine Syndicate
