After the famous naval action, some 6,249 eight reales were salvaged from the SMS Emden, and at the end of the War 1000 were given to W. Kerr, a Sydney jeweller, to be presented to the officers and men of HMAS Sydney present at the action. Kerr mounted each coin with a crowned scroll and it is these pieces that most often come to market.
