Rees Esqre J.P. / Mayor / to / A. E. Stewart, Birmingham Hallmark 1897 (maker Charles Edward Soloman), 62.5 x 36.5mm., suspension loop and ring, good very fine
The Buffalo Volunteer Rifles received 110 medals with the 1877-8 clasp. The unit was raised in East London.
The 2nd medal was presented by David Rees (1857-1926), a long-time Mayor of East London, one-time
Owner of the Eastern Cape newspaper, the Daily Dispatch. Originally employed by the Cape Government Railways in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth before moving to East London, where he was involved in every aspect of the town and where he made his money.
