Buffalo Volunteers.), QSA ribbon attached; "For Special Services", unofficial engraved silver openwork medal with gilt shield, rev. engraved "East London C.C. / Ambulance Corps / Presented by / D. The Buffalo Volunteer Rifles received 110 medals with the 1877-8 clasp. The unit was raised in East London.
The 2nd medal was presented by David Rees (1857-1926), a long-time Mayor of East London, one-time
Owner of the Eastern Cape newspaper, the Daily Dispatch. Originally employed by the Cape Government Railways in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth before moving to East London, where he was involved in every aspect of the town and where he made his money.
