KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II. 359-336 B.C. AR tetradrachm. 14.26 gm. 21 mm. Lifetime issue. Amphipolis mint. Struck circa 355-349/8 B.C. Laureate head of Zeus right / Philip II riding left, raising hand; club below; bow below horse's raised foreleg to lower left. Le Rider 120-121 (D56/R103, unlisted die combination). HGC 3.1, 861. Near Very Fine; attractive old toning; struck from worn dies (note die break on Zeus's cheek, which has progressed to the point that it looks like part of his mustache).
A pleasing example of the early lifetime coinage of Philip II. LeRider identifies the mature horseman on the reverse of this type as King Philip himself.
