Tincomarus was commonly known as 'Tincommius' until the discovery of the Alton hoard in 1996. John Creighton has suggested that Tincomarus was present at the court of Augustus as a child, possibly as an obses (diplomatic hostage) since the imagery used on Tincomarus' coins reflects the coinage of Augustus (see Creighton, Coins and Power in Late Iron Age Britain (2000) p. 93).
