BRITISH COINS. Brass Patent Coin Checker, probably late Victorian, consisting of a brass plate 152mm x 99mm with nine slots for UK coins from Sovereigns down to Shillings, the denomination stamped in capital letters next to its slot, a central stamp PATENT below a crown; beneath the plate are nine corresponding pivoting cams with counterweights. Top polished and overall in good condition, rare.
The device would have been set into a countertop or the top of a cash box and effectively weighed each coin. Underweight coins would not be accepted.
