WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS. INDIA. Photographic Society of India, Copper Prize Medal, awarded 1892, by J S & A B Wyon, semi-draped seated Indian female figure to right, named to W L Colls, 51mm (Pudd 948.27.3). Very fine but has been cleaned, the recipient an important name in photography.
Walter L Colls (1860-1942), professional copperplate etcher, engraver, and printer. Colls issued yearly portfolios of photogravures on behalf of The Linked Ring between 1895 and 1897. The Brotherhood of the Linked Ring was formed in 1892, the year this medal was awarded, and was one of the first groups to promote photography as fine art. Two other medals to Walter Colls appeared in a mixed lot in a recent DNW auction (13 July 2011, lot 1115), the Putney Photographic Society and the West London Photographic Society, both 1890.
